First session

What happens at your first session

Nothing here is a test. This is the order of the hour, so there are no surprises. It runs 50 minutes, or 75 with a partner.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Before you arrive

You get a short email with the address and where to park, or the video link. Bring the baby if you like. Nothing needs filling in beforehand except what the practice's own portal asks for.

  2. 02

Step 2: The first few minutes

Your clinician explains who can see your records and the few times the law asks us to share something, answers questions about fees and asks whether you are comfortable.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The conversation

You tell us about the pregnancy or the baby, and about how you are, as much or as little as you like. You can say what has been hard and what you would like from sessions. Silence is allowed.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The close

Near the end you decide together whether to meet again, how often, and whether in the office or by video. You never have to decide in the room.

What this is, and what it is not

Three things worth knowing before you come.

  • It is a conversation

A first session is a chance to be heard and to see whether the room and the clinician suit you.

  • It is not an assessment of you as a parent

Nobody here is judging how you feed, sleep or cope.

  • It is not a commitment

You can leave without booking another session. Whether to continue is your choice.
