Does this sound familiar?

The weight you have been carrying

These come up often in pregnancy and in the first year after a birth. A perinatal clinician hears them every week.

  • Worry that will not settle

Your mind runs through every what-if about the pregnancy, the birth or the baby, and rest does not come even when the baby sleeps.

  • Not what you expected

Everyone says this should be the happiest time. If it feels heavier, flatter or more frightening than that, you are not the only one.

  • Strain between partners

A baby changes who does what, who sleeps and who feels seen. Talking about it can turn into a quarrel, or into silence.

  • Who am I now

A body, a job and a sense of self have all changed at once, and there is little time to take stock.

Services

Therapy for the months around a birth

During pregnancy

One-on-one sessions for the worry, the planning and the changes that come before the baby. We use cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness skills, and we explain each one before we try it.

After the birth

Sessions that fit around feeds and naps, in the office or on video, with the baby welcome. Together we look at sleep, support and what you want the days to feel like.

For partners

Time for the other parent to talk about how they are, alone or as a couple. Sessions with a partner run 75 minutes and focus on talking and sharing the work.

After a loss

Steady company after a pregnancy loss or the loss of a baby. There is no set pace and no set number of sessions, and you decide how much to say.

About the practice

Four clinicians, one focus

Quell is a Seattle practice for people who are pregnant, who have had a baby, or who are the partner of someone who has. All four of us are trained in perinatal mental health through Postpartum Support International, the body behind the PMH-C certificate.

We offer cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and mindfulness skills, and we say which one we are using and why. Sessions are in our Seattle office or by video for people in Washington.

How to begin

Starting is a short message

We have kept the first steps small, because the first step is often the hardest.

  1. A blank spiral notebook and pen beside a latte and a laptop on a wooden desk
    01

    Write to us

Send a few lines through the form, or call. We reply on business days, usually within one.

  2. A bright lounge with beige sofas, a wooden coffee table and floor-to-ceiling windows
    02

    Meet the right clinician

Tell us who you would like to see and when you can come. We suggest one of the four of us, and offer a short call about fit if you want one.

  3. A flat layered stone resting on raked gravel
    03

    Begin at your pace

Sessions are weekly or every other week, in person or by video, and your clinician sets the pace with you.

How we work

What guides our sessions

The months around a birth ask a great deal of a person. Asking for help with them is part of looking after the baby, and we treat it that way.

  • Your pace

Sessions follow what you can manage this week. Some weeks that is a lot, and some weeks it is ten minutes of quiet.

  • Partners belong

Partners can come in their own right, or to some of your sessions. Their questions deserve a place too.

  • Plain about our methods

We name our methods, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and mindfulness skills, and explain them before we use them.

A tiny seedling sprouts from a mossy rock

“Sessions felt like a conversation with someone who knew what the weeks after a birth are like.”

Common Questions

Questions people ask first

Short answers, with more on the questions page.

General

Do I need to be in crisis to come?

No. Many people come because something feels off, not because of an emergency. If you are in crisis now, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.

Who will I see?

One of our four clinicians, chosen with you by who you want to see and when you can come. If it is not the right fit, we will help you move to another.

Services

What does a session look like?

Sessions are 50 minutes, weekly or every other week. We check in on how the week went, then work on what matters most to you right now. Your clinician sets the pace with you, and there is no set number of sessions.

Can I bring my baby?

Yes. Babies are welcome in the office and on video, and we plan sessions around feeds where we can.

Access

Do you offer video sessions?

Yes, for people who are in Washington during the session, where our clinicians are licensed. In-person sessions are at our Seattle office.

Fees

How do fees work?

We are an out-of-network practice and give you your fee in writing before you start. We can send a monthly receipt for your plan. The fees page goes through it step by step.

Ready to talk?

Write a few lines and we will reply by email or phone, usually within one business day.

Please don't include medical details in this message. For anything urgent, call us.
